Poetic Expression Challenges

June Challenges

For our first mini assignment we were to write a poem about a kind of bird that lives near us.

~Majestic Beauty ~

Not overtly pretty
or attractive to the eye
But majestic in its beauty
with shades of black and white

While other flocks of grandeur
in colourful array
This lone bird stands tall and proud
unseen most every day.

Yet he needs no hues of colour
for beauty to behold
No vast array of splendour
to be shaped into his mould -

For he's own brand of beauty
standing lone and tall
Comes not in his colour
but the magic of his call.

When I awake to morning
and am greeted by his voice
I lose myself within the sound
that brings me so much joy.

Such one majestic beauty
needs not the wings to fly
But just the sweetest harmony
and call of the Magpie.

~ The Crimson Rosella ~

Of all Australia's feathered friends
there is but one to see
Which I confess a favourite
for its vibrant beauty.

Just two simple colours
but together so striking
With a vivid red head and belly
and its brilliant blue tail and wings.

They live within the forests
of eastern tablelands
Along the coast in nature reserves
where some eat from your hand.

Always found in even pairs
their beauty so refined
The phosphorescent lustre
by which they are defined.

And yet I pause to marvel
at the hued intensity
As I witness them in dozens
come to encircle me.

A picture of perfection
traced by the Master's hand
I reflect on their Crimson beauty,
the finest in all the land.

This assignment was to write a poem using all ten challenge words:
mermaid, dolphin, tossed, Neptune, azure, treasure, peaceful, clue, pearls, sea

~ The Dolphin and the Mermaid ~

Within the azure coloured seas
far beneath waves
Lived a special friendship
between a dolphin and mermaid.

The sleek and graceful beauty
of he who had been tamed
By the woman who wore the pearls
and Neptune was her name.

Yet there was an air of mystery
beneath the ocean blue
The sense of something peaceful
between them as a clue.

For love was once a promise
it had been their's to keep
Until a curse had tossed them both
into the oceans deep.

Yet still they found each other
in the azure embrace
A treasure that united them
forever in this place.

But alas the dream could never be
and there would come a day
When the dolphin danced the ocean blue
without his sweet mermaid.
